Five selected photographs from an ongoing series. The photographs were taken in several Georgian cities, including Rustavi, Tbilisi, Chiatura, and Gori, between 2017 and 2022.
The photographed locations encompass a variety of settings, such as marketplaces, the rear of residential complexes, and other spaces characterized by physical and mental withdrawal. These conditions are prevalent in both urban and industrial environments, as well as in city centers and suburbs.
The artist revisited these locations over several years, capturing new photographs each time in an attempt to understand the underlying fascination. It gradually became apparent that these places resonated with a specific aspect of her personal history: her early years spent in a small, unattractive neighborhood in Bat Yam, Israel. From a young age, she was acutely aware of the surrounding crudeness and actively sought to shield herself from its negative influence.
Despite the evident distress in these locations, the local inhabitants seem either oblivious or resigned to their circumstances. They live in close proximity to these decaying environments, affected by their influence, yet seemingly unaffected by their bleakness. A crumbling market square, apocalyptic amusement parks in a deserted park, and the demolition of individual buildings against an open horizon – these scenes, while suggestive of the end of the world, are, in fact, manifestations of a world that still persists. The sensation of impending doom seems unreal, denied, and rejected by the residents, existing solely within the artist’s consciousness and reflected in her images.
